Matthew Brookman documents personalities, places, and things in solitude – revealing honest and striking imperfections, textures, and emotions in our local and global lives. He lives in Washington, D.C. traveling near and far to take pictures.

Portfolio 1: Southeast Asia shows daily life in Myanmar (2006-2007). At first glance, for Western viewers, the surroundings reveal an unexpected foreign place. At second glance, the eyes of the people of Myanmar unexpectedly reveal personal strength blended with curiosity. The folio also shows the labor of food in Vietnam (2005-2006). Here, food is not magically packaged on shelves or displayed in a refrigerated case, but rather food coincides with people working the land and water.

Portfolio 2: Environmental Reportage (1989-2007) captures people alone in their minds, but in public places. Prepping a cat, or on the New York subway, at work in a northern Italy market, on a Los Angeles film set, or even while in a fairly conspicuous Elvis costume – people try to have a moment to themselves. When they are caught in their moments, sometimes they welcome company, and other times the disruption of "privacy" is not welcomed.

Portfolio 3: Food (2004-2005) is in contrast to the perfection of food and food photography in the United States. Here, food is photographed for its unique personality, imperfection, tactile textures, organic forms, and mythological visual qualities.

Portfolio 4: Landscape (2000-2005) records light, landscape, and place aided or interfered with by the manmade. A home is beautifully lit from a nearby reflecting office building or an abandoned, desert hotel slowly disintegrates into the polluted, Salton Sea light.
